Halloween: The Legend Of Stingy Jack
Well Halloween is here, one of my favorite holidays of the year by far. Not to mention my birthday is November 2nd.
If anyone is into folklore and great stories. I recommend you read the one about Jack Stingy, and the its legends to the modern day Jack O' Lantern.
Just to fill in the details that the story leaves out
This folk tale is from Ireland, and the Irish practice the custom of carving faces into turnips and other vegetables to ward off the the roaming spirit of Jack Stingy.
During the great potato famine of the 1800's the Irish immigrated in large numbers to the United States. It is here that they replaced the Turnip with the American Pumpkin, and found it to be a much more suitable and easily carveable vegetable to use. And hence forth it has been a mainstay in the U.S. and Halloween nite.
